Tuesday Photography Tips & Tricks | Wedding Don’ts and Don’ts67---70

As a wedding photographer (or wedding vendor) what would you say is one of the most powerful ways you market yourself?

Some would say their website, blog or maybe Facebook…

Have you ever thought that maybe one of the most powerful ways you market yourself (speaking to mainly wedding photographers here) is at the wedding itself?

The wedding is where the magic happens and is when you are put in front of hundreds of people watching you work – many of whom are single, engaged, or at least know someone getting engaged. People are watching you, and how you represent yourself can either draw so much business to you that you have to turn away clients, or you can turn away clients right there at the wedding unintentionally. How you represent yoursef on the wedding day will be key to your success!

We have a few tips below that will help you put your best foot forward as you showcase yourself in front of hundreds of potential clients.

1) Dress for the Part

Do you love wearing PJ’s all day when you work? Us too! But don’t wear them at your weddings. When I (Jody) was in college taking a career class, I was told by a professor, “Dress for the job you want.” You want to shoot 10,000 weddings? Well you better dress like a $10,000 photographer. If you look sharp, professional, and put together then that is how you and your business will be percieved.

2) Gear, Gear Everywhere

Have lots of bags? Or maybe even just one bag? The last thing you want to do is irritate the bride, or worse, the planner and/or venue coordinator. Money has been spent to make the church/reception look great. Don’t ruin the aesthetic by having your stuff spread out everywhere creating a visual sore spot in the room. One of the best places we have found to stash our stuff is inconspicuously behind a bush, pew, the DJ table or where the band has placed their not needed items. Nothing is more tacky than having your gear become part of their wedding day story.

3) Dying in Secret

Tired, sore, worn out? Sometimes you just want to sit down and rest your feet. People see you with your camera, know you’re on the job and expect to see you working. The last thing you want to be perceived as is lazy. Avoid taking your breaks in public areas. If you’re the only shooter, stay close enough to action so you can know when an event is about to happen so you can easily jump in and cover it, or tell the planner you are taking a little break and if she (or he) is cool, she can let you know when the action is about to start up.

4) You’re Not the Paparazzi

It is your job as a photographer or videographer to capture the moments and tell the story without becoming a part of the story; so don’t block the guests’ view of the action. If you are a team of two, pick one shooter to be more close in on the action, and have the other shoot from further away. If you have a team of photographers and a team of videographers, the shooting area can become a little cramped so make sure you’re working together to capture what you need to and at the same time avoiding blocking everyone’s view. Also, when you’re not shooting, especially during bigger reception events (cake cutting, first dances, toasts, etc.) – SQUAT DOWN. Try not to not stand and block others from enjoying the moments that are going on. If your thighs are not sore the next day, maybe you’re not ducking down and getting yourself out of the way enough to be inconspicuous :) Respect each other and respect the wedding guests – Don’t get in the way!

5) A Hankering for Cake

We all need to eat – no doubt about it, or we will pass out in the middle of the dance floor, which we don’t recommend. :) A few tips on how and when to eat: If a buffet, make sure all the guests have gone through the line before you step in (and do so only if you have been invited to!). Even if it is a buffet, try to avoid going through the food line yourself if you can. When was the last time you were at a classy five star restaurant and saw the waitstaff eating in front of you? Refer to rule 3 as to where you should eat your dinner.

6) The Secret of

6) Looking Professional

Want to take your professional look up a notch? Get a secret service ear piece. It will bring your coolness to a whole new level instantaneously :) Seriously though, as a side note, if you have more than one shooter it’s AWESOME to be able to communicate with each other via two-way radios. Not only does it look cool but people no longer think you are slacking by texting/talking to your friends when you “should” be working.

Hope these have helped! If you have your own Don’ts and Don’ts to add, feel free to share with the rest of us.

Next week will be sharing about THE most powerful marketing tool that we use at weddings, so stay tuned! :) :)

Jacqueline Washburn Pha ha ha ha!!!! Those pics you used of the kitten and the kid horkin' down cake are stinkin halarious! Love all the tips dear!
Michelle Stone love these tips!!
Beth Hi Jody, My hubby and I are getting ready to do our first "paid" wedding this weekend so these tips are just in time. Nothing I really didn't know but refreshing the memory is never a bad thing. I first heard you and Zach on a Cameradojo podcast nearly a year ago when we first decided to start our business. Y'all are truely an inspiration! Thanks for sharing all that you do.
Jody Gray @Allyson - You're right, you do have to wear something nice but also has to let you climb around and even lay on the ground if you wanted to :) What I wear to weddings is the same 'ol black top every time - it's lighter material, flexible, kind of long so it tucks in easily and I don't have to worry about flashing people, and the neck goes really high so I don't reveal all when I lean over. Don't want to become the tacky distraction of the wedding! In regards to pants I found some nice dress slacks that look sharp but are easy to move around in. There is no way I would wear a dress or skirt. I want to be able to focus on my shooting and not having to worry about flashing people :) I think the biggest thing is to just avoid sloppy clothes and make sure to dress appropriately for the occassion and represent yourself well!
AmyPunky Photography So true!! Thanks for sharing!!!
allyson I have wondered about dress, what can you wear that is functionaI as a photographer but keeps you Iooking professionaI? I mean as a photographer I am everywhere, on the ground cIimbing ladders etc, have you found cIothes that hoId up but stiII make you Iook Iike a miIIion bucks?
Scoobie Outstanding Wedding tips, You guys are the best. When are we doing dinner ??? Scoobie and Lisa...

Tuesday Photography Tips & Tricks – Shoot em’ Straight!59---70

Today’s tips and tricks is a very simple technique that I learned back in the early part of 2008 when I (Zach) had been shooting for just under a year professionally. Back then, me and another great Nashville photographer Evan Baines used to send our favorite few images from our recent shoots back and forth for critique from each other. It was cool how he would see things in my shots that I did not and vice-versa. I highly recommend this between photographers because it will help you grow tons faster if you have someone you respect looking at your images from an outside perspective!

So after one particular shoot that I had done, I sent over a few shots and got some amazing advice from Evan. I showed him this image and was sure he was going to love it (because I was sooo excited about it myself).

photography tips and tricks

Evan did love the shot, but he noticed one major flaw in the image that I did not. He told me to either, “Shoot it straight, or shoot it purposely crooked. Never shoot it a little bit crooked like you did.”

So, I went in, cropped the shot slightly, and re-sent it over.

Photography tips and tricks

And I was like “Whoa! I never noticed that!”  Images that are purposely straight as an arrow or purposely crooked leave your audience feeling a certain way about the shot. If your shot is straight, it looks like it is balanced and even and makes you feel that way. If a shot is purposely crooked it gives you a sense of movement, or can even make you feel like you are off balance if pushed too far. Next time you watch a movie and it gets scary or intense, you might just notice that the camera will start to get very crooked and off axis in order to make you feel the same way.

Photography tips and tricks

The above image from the same shoot is shot purposely crooked which gives you a feeling of movement. That is why it works so well with this shot of the bride and groom running, even though there is no camera blur in the shot.

So, shoot em straight or shoot em’ crooked and your images will go to the next level!

Rosaura Sandoval I wish I would have found your blog earlier. Love your photography and tips and tricks. Thank you! :)
Nicole Great point! Thank so much.
Jenny Awesome advice! My father in law taught me that lesson about 3 years ago..my pics have been straight ever since. It also helped me to notice the background more and how it's interacting with the subject. :) LOVE THESE posts!!
Deyla Huss Photography Great tip! I Thanks for sharing!
Ginny Corbett Great tip!
Stephen Knuth This is amazing advice for everyone!!!! During one of the first weddings I ever shot, the lead photographer pointed this out to me and that I had shot it so off axis that it seemed as the alter was going to fall off the side of the earth! Oops! :) Been straight shooting since that wedding!
Jen Johnson Fantastic advice!!! I love the TT&T posts...keep em coming!

A Memorial to My Hero, My Grandfather37---40

My grandfather on my father’s side, was Thomas Gray. He was an orphan and ran away from his foster home at age 15 and joined the US Calvary. On June 6th 1944 he stormed the beach-head of Normandy. Although I barely knew him as he died in 1991, his sacrifice helped free Europe from the evil of the Nazi’s and helped to stop one of the most horrific wars in history.  His skill in battle also allowed him to survive some of the bloodiest battles in the war.

Thank you Grandpa Thomas for your sacrifice for me and for this country.

DMB Do you know what beach he landed on? If he was U.S. it most probably was Utah or Omaha. In either case, I'd have some video for you. On Jo's side "Grandpa George" (Great to her) was a Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps in WWI. He flew a bi-plane, in a night squadron, over the trenches in Europe. Not what you'd call high tech. Must have taken a lot of courage.
Chris Oaten Servicemen and women all over the world are awesome. Their sacrifices humble me and often make me weep. In Australia, we celebrate our fallen each year on Anzac Day. For me, it is the most sacred day of the year.
Michael Johnson HOOAH! Thanks to Grandpa Gray and all Service men and woman for allowing us to live in the greatest Country in the world and in to live in freedom. Unfortunately there is evil in this world and without their brave sacrifice, we certainly would not enjoy our way of life. Happy Memorial Day
