Want to Watch us Shoot a Wedding? Now is your chance thanks to PhotoVision75---70

Last weekend we had a pretty busy couple of days and it was packed full to say the least.  Interviews, filming, a wedding and more interviews, whew!  Well now we are prepared to share with you the latest thing we are a part of AND offer you a special promo code, so make sure to read on!

We were selected to be a part of PhotoVision‘s instructional DVD collection.  As many of you may know, PhotoVision gives photographers an intimate look at industry leading pros’ studios.  Subscribers get an inside look into the different studios ranging from how they shoot, edit, market, sales, and PhotoVision even takes you on location with real shoots and even real weddings.  PhotoVision offers yearly subscriptions where you get 6 DVDs that include 12 hours featuring 20 different leading photographers.  These DVDs are mailed out bi-monthly in 2-hour segments – SO much goodness and we are excited that we now will be a part of.

It’s funny because when we first started out we purchased a PhotoVision DVD series and they really helped us become the photographers we are today.  It is through those DVDs that we came to know and admire great photographers like Jeffrey & Julia Woods, Parker J. Pfister, & Michele Celentano.  It’s funny how things come full circle :)

(Don’t forget to read below at the bottom of the post – a special promo code is available for you, our readers!)

We had a great time as Ed Piece (the creator of PhotoVision) and his hardworking sidekick Taylor flew in to Nashville to hang with and shoot us last weekend.  Before the first segment that we are featured in is released next month, we thought we would share some behind the scenes goodness!

Setting up in our living room/meeting space…

Taylor taking a break to smile for the camera…

Ed putting mics on us for the  interview portion…

The guys working hard and sweating right along with us as they captured us throughout the wedding day…

After the wedding, the next day Zach took the cameras through our post process.

And after all of our hard work it was time to celebrate at J. Alexanders… yum :)

Ok, so you’re like, “That’s cool and all but how do I get in on this goodness?”  Well, my friends, we have an answer!!!!!  Keep on reading…

*Get this – for 6 DVDs and 12 hours of training the regular cost is $149 per year… BUT because you are a friend and blog follower of us,  if you enter in promo code “GRAY” then you get the full year of DVDs for $39! REGISTER HERE or read on for more step-by-step instructions.

What’s even more exciting is starting in the next issue coming out, you will get a look into two areas of our studio 1) how we market our business via social media and 2) follow along and begin the journey with us as you watch us shoot a real wedding (along with other segments from other awesome photographers :).

The Details:

- Visit PhotoVision

- At the bottom, click on “Register for PhotoVision 2010″

- Fill out all of the requested info

- Enter your promo code “GRAY” when prompted

- You will be mailed (yes, actually hard copies!) the back issues that released earlier this year and bi-monthly you will receive the rest of this year’s DVDs!

- Make some popcorn, sit back and prepare to get your learn on!

Tuesday Photography Tips & Tricks – The Beauty of the Expo Disc & White Balance83---70

Don’t you hate it how sometimes you spend FOREVER in Lightroom or Photoshop trying to get the stinkin’ correct white balance for your images?  Waste time no more!  These next minutes will forever change your editing time, and therefore will change your life.

Guaranteed.

Read on :)

When we first started shooting professionally back in ’07, we (well, really Zach :) stumbled across this awesome little guy called the ExpoDisc, and it truly has changed our editing and edit time.  You know how we’re big advocates of shooting everything in camera so your edit time is next to nil and how we show clients images as we are shooting because they look so great right on the back of our cameras?  Well, the ExpoDisc, my friend, is a HUGE part of this.

The ExpoDisc is essentially a gray card.  Just smaller and more accurate. For those who like to read the detailed information of its workings, you can visit the ExpoDisc web page on Expo Imaging’s site.

The Awesomeness of the Expo Disc:

- It’s small and comes with a strap where you can wear it around your neck or in a little carrying case that attaches to your belt.  SWEET.
- Allows you to get a custom white balance, set it in your camera and all the following images will have beautiful color!  Try showing your subjects your images as you are shooting – they will FLIP!
- If you forget to get a custom WB (which it really takes about 5 seconds and doing it beforehand is the way you want to do it :) then you can grab the WB real quick after shooting in that particular scene and apply it to the previous images in Lightroom later.
- If you have two cameras, only one camera has to get the custom WB and then in post you can simply and quickly apply the correct WB to the other camera’s images so the colors will match!
- The ExpoDisc is great for double checking your exposure!

We believe so strongly in Expo Imaging’s ExpoDisc that we have partnered with them for our IN-CAMERA photography workshops.  Fun times!

They also have used our images for their ads.

The ExpoDisc is seriously a must have for every photographer.  If we didn’t believe in it as much as we do, we wouldn’t be here telling you about it :)

Here are two other examples of images we have taken, and how big of a difference getting a custom WB makes as opposed to guessing or the camera’s awful auto white balance.

The ExpoDisc is put out by Expo Imaging and you can visit their site HERE.

Tips for Purchasing an ExpoDisc:

-We use the ExpoDisc Neutral
- When you buy one, buy the one that fits your biggest lens.

Who else out there uses the ExpoDisc?  Will you ever be able to live without it now?  :)

Happy Tuesday!!!

Joe Anna Awesome tip :) I went right over to B&H and purchased one. I can't wait to try it out! When are yall having another workshop?
Stan Dunlap Have used it for several years, man it is an awesome little tool!
Zach Kevin- If you are bouncing flash off of a wall or ceiling in a reception, then you simply aim your flash straight ahead, put on the Expo Disk, and take an image of the ceiling or wall you are bouncing off of. Then set that image for your custom white balance. No matter what color the ceiling is, it will take the tints out and give you a perfect 18% gray! If you are using flash outdoors, then is a different story. 1st, NEVER use on-camera flash outdoors pointed directly at your subject; instead, use off-camera flash outdoors and do it on manual mode only. Once you get your meter reading (using a hand held meter) then simply take an image of your off-camera flash from the metered position (where your subject will be) and you got it! Hope that helps!!
Courtney Appleton After taking your workshop I knew I HAD to have the Expo disc!!! It has made my life so much easier!!! No more stress over white balance! Woohoo!!!! Thanks guys!!!
Kate McNamara LOVE IT!!!! IM GOING TO BUY AN EXPO! miss you guys ;) it thrilled my heart of hearts to see your faces at ceces!
Ginny Corbett ExpoDisc sent me one to give away at For the Love Workshop. I have been so tempted to break that sucker open and use it myself. I guess I need to hurry up and buy one :)
Cesar Palima I love it. Thanks for sharing.
Amy I was just asking another photographer about the Expo Disc yesterday. How ironic that this is the topic today. I'm going to B&H's website right now and buying one! Thanks for these Tuesday tips!
Thomas Lester Thanks Jody for the explaination. I guess in a wedding scenario, it would make sense to maybe stack the first set of images as WB images. Then in LR, you can figure out which one is which and WB based on your location in the room. Portraits, it would be cake. Thanks!
Diane Parsons I use the Expo Disc - I love it!!
Jaime + Chase We LOVE LOVE LOVE our ExpoDisc!! I don't know how we shot before this. During IN-Camera, we were just blown away knowing this was life changing. When Chase won it... our lives DID change! Now we can't shoot without it!! Not only that but we have made time together a possibility since we cut down editing time by 3/4s!!! Zach and Jody, we LOVE you and are so thankful you have shared your wisdom with us!! Way beyond worth it to those considering!!!
Chad Wojtysiak I purchased a neutral balance expodisc two years ago and love it! This past year we took a trip to Ireland and I lost it the last days e were there. I was so out of sorts without it I bought a new one when we got back. Though I tried the warm for the second time around. It is ok for portraits, but for weddings the neutral is a must have. It is amazing how well it works. Don't leave home without it!
Kevin I got one of these and it works great. But, once you throw a flash in to the mix, it's very confusing. The video doesn't show how. I would love it if you did a follow up post showing how you use the expodisc with a flash.
Rebecca Walker I LOVE my expo disc!! It has changed my life, and cut my editing time below half! Even if I had not have won this during IN-Camera, I would have bought it the next day. The $100 is beyond worth it :)
Kelli Okay, shame on me, I've owned an Expo disc for 2 years and have never really used it. I just get so "in the moment" at a shoot I hate to stop to mess with white balance. Even 5 seconds seems to really cause a break in the action, but I'll give it another shot!
Matt Britton Expodisc is amazing. I bought one after the workshops and can't believe the difference it makes. I love the fact that it gets the tint as well. Must have for any photographer!
Eugene & Heather How about this is disc is rocking our video world! Saves soo much time in post! Aww yeah baby!!
Jody Gray @Thomas - Correct, you DO need to go to the position of the subject and point it towards the light. This is great for portraits, but the example you brought up - ceremony, where you don't exactly want to be up in their mug - you can 1) get the white balance reading before the ceremony begins (if it's indoors and the light won't be different by the time the ceremony is happening), or if it's outside you can at least point your camera in the same lighting situation and get it close. Other than that, no worries and do what you have always done before. It's definitely not something to write off because it sometimes may not be ideal for ceremonies. Use it all the time otherwise. @Anna - Whenever the light changes, that changes the white balance. Every new scene that you are shooting in you want to grab a white balance. It really only takes literally 5 seconds and it's worth it because it will save you TONS of time in post :)
Cory phillips We bought one right after our mentoring session and have been amazed! I honestly never shoot without it : )
Anna Sawin Yes, as Thomas says, I never feel like it is quite flexible enough for me--but maybe I'm not doing it right! How often are you changing balance? I'm intrigued by GETTING IT RIGHT in camera!
Paul Korson Great post guys, I love my expo disc and the images that result from proper white balances rock. There are tons of other systems but I've never found anything this convenient since your subject doesn't have to hold a target. The only problem I have with them is the problem that I seem to have with all of the systems...change in light = change in white balance. When you're controlling the light it really isn't a big issue but I recently had a wedding that had different light bulbs in all of their lights and each grouping had a different color cast meaning that I had to do a custom white balance depending on where I was standing in the room. I ended up having to ditch the in camera wb and just took the different readings and applied them in lightroom after the fact. Moral of the story though, I got the right wb and didn't have to guess but anyone thinking about using it just keep in mind that its an extra step and you might get a bit obsessive over having the right colors ;)
Wes Brown I LOVE my Expo Disc. You guys introduced me to it last year during a workshop and while I understood it, I just didn't "get it". Eventually I went out on a limb and purchased one...one of the best $100 I've ever spent on gear. The color that can be captured "in camera" is breath taking. Thank you guys so much!
Thomas Lester BTW... Jody's face on the "Big Smiles" graphic is pretty funny.
Thomas Lester I've thought about buying one of these things for a long time, but all the videos on their site say you need to go to the subjects position and get your WB reading shooting towards the light. We are wedding photographers. We can't just hop up on the alter shoot towards the light during a ceremony. So, does it HAVE to happen this way? Or can you shoot at your subject? How do you guys do it?

Our Visit to the Pictage Offices!33---40

Since almost the beginning of our business, we have been members of Pictage, the industry leader in online image hosting, printing and sales solutions, and services to professional photographers. Once we got their informational DVD on all the services they offered, we were sold!

Pictage has been HUGE in assisting us in our business, and their services for photographers range widely, and without them we would be spending countless hours dealing with print orders and many other things.

When we were in CA in December we set some time aside to visit the offices and have lunch with a few of the peeps!  Enjoy the visual journey of our visit, thanks to the iPhone‘s picture taking abilities!

First, we were greeted with a custom welcome screen in the main entryway of our images… awwww, special.

iphoneentrance

Then the FABULOUS Scott Miura gave us a tour of the place which started in CEO Jim Collins‘ office… Jim wasn’t there yet so Zach was welcomed to take a moment and see how it felt in Jim’s Seat.  Ohhh… the power…

iphone ceo office

We got to see and meet the people in all the departments and what a system they have set up there!  We stopped by shipping and were told that we had just missed the crazy rush of getting all the thousands of Christmas orders out in time.  Here were some of their regular orders waiting for pickup (this was one bin of like 4 or 5!).

And of course, we left our mark on a few whiteboards that just happened to be around…

We headed off to lunch with the FAB Emily, Scott M., Scott A., and CEO Jim at the Red Car Brewery, and then came back for a few photos :)

Here is us with Jim & Paul Manke!

iphone pic together

What we love about Pictage is that the people there really care.  They are open to any and all feedback and really want to make Pictage the absolute best it can be for their fellow photographers.

When we got back from our travels we had a package waiting for us with a print of the below picture that was taken of us all together…  Aw!

(From L to R – Scott A, Jody, Jim, Zach, Emily, & Scott M.  We heart you guys!)

We love how the people at Pictage really care about photographers.  They aren’t interested in making their own lives easier, they are interested in making our lives as photographers easier.  Thanks everyone at Pictage for all you do!!

Who else out there is a fellow Pictager?  What do you use Pictage for and what do you like about it?

Jody Gray @Stephen - you bet we are going to WPPI!
Jeff Dolan This is truly great to hear about Pictage. Thanks for sharing. It's always good to hear there are caring people running the business!
Dawn Love them!
Stephen Knuth I love Pictage! What fun it sure was spending time with you in SoCal. Miss you guys!!! You going to wppi??
Cyler Parent I love Pictage. Their dedication to making my client's experience the best it can be is only one of many reasons why I <3 them and everything they do.
Jim Collins That jolt of power you felt in my chair was an electric cord that someone in the call center hooked up to it to fry me a little any time my title starts to go to my head. Hope it didn't get you too bad. It was great having you guys here. I love it when Photographers visit! Jim
shawnreeder Looks like you all had a blast!!! I can't wait to visit the Pictage offices one of these days.
Emily We heart you more!!! Thanks so much for spending time with us.
Scott Miura as Scott Anderson commented, it was such a treat having you both visit and grateful for all you do for our photography community. This post is wonderful and I am especially glad that you enjoyed your visit (and tour)!! Here's to making 2010 another wonderful year...see you both at WPPI in March.
Courtney Appleton It was so great to see you guys at Pictage! We love seeing your work here! Hope to see you at WPPI!!!

Ronald McDonald House Elephant Cake Shoot41---40

“Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. The treatment may last a day, a month, or even longer. It’s a long time to be away from home, or to divide a family. Ronald McDonald Houses around the world offer families a way to stay together, in proximity to the treatment hospital, and be comfortable and cared for during their stay.” – Ronald McDonald Website

Jody and I were asked to shoot a special cake recently that was donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Nashville by the amazing Amy Richardson from The Bake Shoppe! The cake was for the kids for their Halloween party and it was a big hit! The cake was inspired by a cool gift card that the girls at the Bake Shop had seen and decided they could do a cake to match. It looked amazing and we came down and took some shots of the cake and the kids and staff and had a ton of fun!! Check out the cake shots below!!

Photo Restoration – The Perfect Christmas Gift Idea51---70

Old and damaged Photo + My Sister = awesomeness

I have to say that my sister is a super talented gal.  All of us girls (I have an older and a younger sister) are creative in our own ways thanks to both of my parents.  I want to take a moment and brag on my older sister, as well as maybe give you some ideas for Christmas shopping!

Introducing my sister Jacq (also know as Jacqueline or Jackie as I called her growing up):

Jacq_withName

Not only is my sister super organized, and loves photography (must be in the genes, check out this shot my mom took of her when we were little…aw so cute!)…

JacqCamera1

…but my sister blows me away with her talent at the computer.  Jacq for the past couple of years has worked with a company doing photo restoration and has branched out on her own.  Her work blows me away!!  She can take a water damaged photo, a faded photo, a torn photo – you name it and bring the image back to it’s original state.  It has been crazy seeing the hundreds and hundreds of projects that she has worked on and what she has done.

With a baby on the way (the first grandchild of both sides of our family!  Woo hoo) my sister has moved into freelance and fired up her own business.  So exciting!

For those of you wondering out there what meaningful Christmas gift you can give your parents, grandparents, siblings, or special someone, think about having an image restored & retouched. With technology these days and a skilled person utilizing these tools correctly, it’s amazing what memories can be pulled back and make such a meaningful gift.

Check out a small sample of her work:

Amazing, eh?  Talk about a meaningful Christmas gift for a family member or loved one.

If you’re interested in having any images restored, contact Jacq at JWashburnPR@yahoo.com.  Mention you found her on our blog and receive a free quote.  Contact her by December 5th and receive 15% off!

Nashville Scene 20th Anniversary Shoot38---40

Jody and I had the privilege of shooting the 20th anniversary party for the Nashville Scene/NFocus magazines. It was a really fun night filled with fun and frivolity and we met a ton of super cool “who’s who” folks in Nashville! The event was sponsored by some different companies in town that you will see in some of the detail shots and was held at the awesome venue One Eleven.

It is really cool that we have been asked to take part in events like this and hope to continue to do more of them in the future! Enjoy the pics!

If you’re a bride looking for a custom wedding gown, or even if you’re a woman who has great taste and wants a fantastic, custom ensemble or staple piece to add to your clothing collection – we have just the designer for you!

Meet Olia Zavozina (zav-oh-zeen-uh :)

Olia hails from Russia and is most definitely one to keep your eye on.  After moving to the United States only a few years ago, Olia has already caught the attention of many, not only through her designs, but with her personality as well!  Olia is amazingly sweet and kind and her work has been seen on Good Morning America, Oscar Night, 2008 CMT Awards, WTVF Channel 5, Nashville Lifestyles Magazine, Icon in the Gulch, and The Nashville RAGE, to name a few.   Olia is very active in the local Nashville community and her gowns have been featured at many local fashion shows and at numerous charity fundraisers.

We had the great privilege to do a shoot of a few of Olia’s many pieces. Below we are giving you a sneak peek into some of her latest wedding designs.

FYI the lovely jewelry pieces that you see paired up with these gowns are the hand-made custom pieces by Adornments.

If you could have one custom clothing item made for you by Olia what would it be?  Before you answer, make sure to check out the other pieces on her site just besides wedding dresses!

Would you like some Relish with your Invitations?49---40

This post has been too long in coming! It is finally time to share with our blog readers the suh-weet ladies of RELISH!!

(L to R – Stephanie, Leann, Rebecca)

Once again, Zach and I would like to take you back to our days of wedding planning. We like to think we’re a cool, vibe-a licious couple, and we wanted invitations to reflect that! Well no can do. We had the hardest time finding invitations that were cool and reflected us. Sooooooo we resorted to making our own invitations. I do say so myself that they turned out pretty well, but it took a lot of time and who has tons of time when you’re planning you’re wedding?? Well, never fear – there are new ways now to do your invitations!!!!!

At least a month or so ago we visited the offices of the Relish Gals! We hung out with Stephanie & Rebecca (founders), met Leann Cooper (Chairwoman), Dustin (production manager) and just had a grand ‘ol time :) These ladies are setting the trend with invitations, and on their site you can create your very own custom invitations, and the best part – you don’t have to assemble them!!!!! The staff at Relish does all the work! They do invitations of all kinds – not just wedding invites! The options are endless.

Make sure to check out their blog as well as website!
