Tuesday Tips & Tricks | Where You Are In Five Years Depends On Two Things…82---70

Today’s tips and tricks photography blog is all about how to get where you want to be in five years and the most crucial steps you can take to get there. Anyone who knows me (Zach) has probably heard me say, “Where you are in five years is dependent on two things; the People you meet and Books that you read.”   Since we have put that truth into practice it has made the world of difference in our business.

Reading books about business is something that you can do from the privacy of your home and something that you can do any time as long as you MAKE time to do it. It is pretty simple to do if you commit to it, and Jody and I can both say that the books we have read have completely changed and helped create our business into what it is today.

The people you meet is a whole other story though! In order to meet people that will help encourage, push you and empower you to make your business better, you have to actually get out of your office or home and go and meet them. It can be difficult sometimes to find great community in the photography world and many times we just end up spending most of our “meeting people” time in the way of checking out other people’s blogs and going on forums. Those are great, and you can learn a ton of things, but nothing will ever replace actual time with other people having real communication and getting to know people on a personal level. The amazing people that we have met in this industry and the wealth of knowledge that they have freely given has been key in our business.

So, where are all these people and how can YOU connect to them?

There is one photography conference that Jody and I have been to, and out of WPPI, PPA, PDN and the other cool photographer conferences out there, the one that we have gotten the most out of, that we made the most friends at and truly was the biggest blessing on our business was Pictage’s PartnerCon in New Orleans.

This 3 day conference is unlike most of the others because it is small (limited to only 500 photographers!), intimate and full of not only amazing content, but amazing people. It is run by one of the most amazing CEO’s that we have ever had the priveledge of knowing, Jim Collins and his team.  If you could say one thing about Jim and his amazing staff at Pictage, it is that they absolutely LOVE photographers and want nothing more than to see them succeed. Jim has a servants heart and a huge desire to create something that will help make your business all that you want it to be.

PartnerCon is only $249 for members of Pictage or ShootQ and $349 for non-members.  This is a STEAL and even includes your meals!!! They price this thing to basically cover costs and do this entire event because they truly love photographers. Jody and I don’t work for Pictage and get nothing out of telling you about it other than the joy of knowing that if you come, it will rock your businesses face off!

PartnerCon is awesome because it features classes as well as workshops from a stellar lineup of photographers!  We  are honored to have been selected again this year to be a part of PartnerCon and this year we are pumped to be leading a shooting workshop from 2-4pm on Wednesday, November 10th!  The workshop is named “Killer On Location Lighting for the Modern bride and groom.”  :)  There are a ton of other awesome sessions and workshops to check out so click HERE to see all the speaker and shooting workshops!

We will be shooting on the streets around the French Quarter and this will be a content rich workshop you won’t want to miss! Ahhhhhhhhhh! We are speaking at WPPI!38---40

We were having a normal day sitting in our office working on some details for weddings and getting things out to our clients, when we received an email from WPPI letting know that we had just been selected to teach a Master Class in Las Vegas in 2011!! We sat there stunned and ecstatic at the same time. We have worked so hard on everything that we have been doing for other photographers and we feel that this invite is like a little pat on the back (ok, more like a whomping wack ;), and a great affirmation to us of our goals and all that we have been striving for.

We have a huge passion to see other photographers succeed and feel like there are no limits to what they can do if they are driven. We are honored to be a part of WPPI 2011 and can’t wait to have a Master Class that will be unlike any other! There is a limit of 35 seats available for this Master Class, so if you want to get in on it be sure to sign up as soon as seats go live! We will be Twittering and blogging again to let you know when that happens.

For those of you that know me (Zach), I love to dream big dreams and come up with huge (sometimes crazy) ideas, and WPPI 2011 is no exception. Now that we are teaching this Master Class, we really want to do something that is so big you won’t believe it. The Grays are speaking on the 2010 Top Pro Tour by Westcott!60---70

We are super pumped to share with you that the speakers and dates have been released for the Westcott Lighting 2010 Top Pro Tour!  We are thrilled that we are a part of this with so many other fantastic industry leaders!

A little summary about the event:

The tour will be featuring the “Best-of-the-Best” in the photography industry as well as have a Westcott Representative at each stop to present and answer any technical questions you may have. We also will be teaching everything from Constant Lighting to Green Screen Photography with the addition of providing information on how you can better your business and utilize all this free social media out on the web.

We are a part of the Nashville stop on September 22nd and can’t wait to share with you our lighting knowledge as well as some other great stuff!!

Wrapping Up the SHOWIT Freedom Speaking Tour44---40

We’re back in Nashville and what a fab few last days it has been!

On Thursday morning last week, we flew into the Windy City and met up with the SHOWIT team for the Chicago leg! Hanging out that afternoon was great (of course, had to stop at H&M on the way!) and that evening the tour went really well.  We met so many of you and boy, Chicago has a great community of photographers out there!  Through the night we rode the bus with the SHOWIT team, got officially inducted (ha ha), and woke up in Nashville and did everything again that evening!

We are so glad that we were able to be a part of this and thanks to all of you who came out!

Unfortunately, we really didn’t take that many pictures but we thought we would share what we have and what we were given from other photogs!

Below we have David Jay, who is the creator behind SHOWIT, the platform that thousands use for their websites. DJ has a great heart for equipping others with knowledge & resources so they truly can have a great business but not be bound to it.  Freedom is what it’s all about!

If you haven’t heard the pipes of Molly Jenson – you need to.  This girl provided the tunes for the tour and has a fantastic voice and is a pleasure to listen to (and very entertaining… ha ha).  Way to go Nashville, for being her favorite stop!

This was our first time meeting Jim Davis Hicks a wedding & philanthropic photographer.  He was on the tour getting the word out on his Action Runner goodness (who sponsored the tour), as well as Thirst Relief International.   Jim has a great heart for people and is also a hilarious hang.

Bob & Dawn Davis were the other speakers at the Chicago stop.  Sadly, we didn’t bring our camera so the best we have is an iPhone photo of Bob sharing and doing a lighting demo…

We had never met Bob & Dawn before, and wow, what a great couple.  We love their passion for not only their work, but for their family!  If you have not checked them out…. you should :)

For the Nashville leg, the ever-so-joyful and sweet Sarah Barlow joined the speaker lineup and shared all of her goodness about branding and how to be productive by sharing great tips on running your day-to-day business.

Wrapping up each tour was the fab Kevin Sturm.  Kevin is such a great guy and is a huge part of SHOWIT.  He also facilitated all of the details and logistics for the whole tour and is the man! You ‘da best, Kevin!

So we totally stink because Mr. Andrew Barlow was a big part in making each of the SHOWIT Tour stops work when it came to the mics, sound, video, but alas, we have no photos of him!!  (Well, I do have the one iPhone photo with the clown glasses, but I don’t think he would be too thrilled with us posting it…).  Andrew is dedicated to SHOWIT and to all of the SHOWIT users.  We kid you not, he was up late when all of us were having fun responding to SHOWIT users needs and requests.  Talk about customer service!! Follow Andrew on Twitter and tell him he’s the bomb! :)

Props go to Nashville based photographer Michael Gomez, who is co-owner of Nashbox Studios – the SWEET place that the SHOWIT Nashville leg took place at. (Side note – Nashville area photogs – if you are looking for a space that you can utilize every now and then for studio work, Nashbox Studios is a FAB place to check out).

Chicago Bound!14---40

This is the first blog post that we have ever done from our iPhone. Exciting times :) As we write this we are in the Nashville airport waiting for our one way flight to the Windy City! We’re excited to be joining up with the Show It freedom tour for the last two legs (Chicago & Nashville) and it’s going to be great!

We especially can’t wait to see some of our friends up in the North!! Great times!

WPPI Business Mentoring Sessions!33---40

The end of February is quickly coming and March will soon be here.  You know what that means – WPPI!!!!!!!!!   Yes, we will be going, and cannot wait to see some of you again and meet the rest of you for the first time!  Ya gotta love big photographer conventions with thousands of other photogs!
On our blog next week will be events & speakers that you do NOT want to miss out on including a few appearances and lighting demonstrations that we will be a part of!  Make sure to stop on by.
Exciting WPPI News

We have been asked by tons of photographers to host some sort of workshop while we are at WPPI.  We love doing big group events, but at the same time there is nothing more beneficial than one-on-one time with others.  That being said, we have decided to offer an exclusive amount of one-on-one hour and a half mentoring sessions while we are at WPPI!  We are opening three sessions for the first three photographers to sign up!

These mentoring sessions will be a unique opportunity for you to have us all to yourself  for one and a half hours and talk about anything from marketing and branding, to social networking and pricing, to anything else you want to know about. Do you want to make a six figure income shooting weddings? Do you want to work with clients who LOVE what you do and make you excited about going to work? Do you want to have a business that you run, instead of having a business that runs you?  Do you feel like you’re in a rut and need some motivation?  If so, then this is exactly what you might need!! This will sell out super fast, so be ready!

Are you ready to take your business to the next level? Then here is what you need to do!

1. Tomorrow  (Friday the 26th) at noon (Central time), as soon as registration is open, we will send out a tweet (make sure you are following us on Twitter) with the link to register and pay on PayPal.
2. Be one of the first 3 people to sign up to insure a seat.
3. We will contact you and set up a time during WPPI for us to take you out for coffee and you can pick our brains on anything regarding business. We can also take a hard look at your business from the our perspective and give you feedback if that is something you desire.

*(Note: We can talk about photography and technique at these mentoring sessions, but it will be limited and there will be no hands-on shooting of any type done at these mentoring sessions.  It’s hard to demonstrate and talk about lighting inside a coffee shop with no gear on hand… we can maybe try though! ;)
