New York City and Back Again! We Survived!42---40

Jody and I just got back from our first trip as husband and wife to New York City! Jody had been there twice before, but I had never been. We came out to go to the PDN Photo Plus Expo which is one of the largest photography expo’s in the world with over 27,000 in attendance. The show was awesome and Jody and I were asked to speak at the Westcott booth about lighting (which was really cool!). We got to hang with the whole crew from Westcott for dinner and meet the Owner, Vice President Kelly Mondora and hang with the amazing sales team John and David. There was also another Westcott Pro there who was teaching about lighting and has been working with Westcott for the last 23 years, Jim.

Thanks to ALLLLLLL of you for sending us suggestions of things to do while in NYC!  Sadly, our visiting time there was really short, and we left the list of everyone’s suggestions of what to do on the bus right before we got dropped off at Times Square… *sighs*  We have decided that we need to make another trip and do all of the cool ideas that were mentioned!  Because we were not really able to do any of the suggestions, we still have a prize to give! We will be announcing the winner of the “Tell us what to do in New York” this Friday, so stay tuned!! You are not going to believe how awesome the prize is!!  :)

Jody and I also got to explore the city and high on my to-do list was getting a real, New York style hot dog from a street vendor! We also got to hang out in Time Square, go for a LONG walk through Central Park and eat at the Tick-Tock Diner and the amazing Italian eatery, Carmines. We also got to go to some cool after parties and met some amazing people like Ed Pierce from Photo Vision and Me Rah Koh, Jim Collins CEO of Pictage, and Kevin Rubin, CFO of Pictage, and saw our good friend Jeremy Cowart who was guest speaking at one of the lectures for the show. It was a whirlwind trip, we did a lot of walking, but we are glad to be home!

Check out some of the shots from the trip!!

Here is Jody and I in the back of the ferry ride! We took this ferry from Jersey to Manhattan everyday for the show. The whole Westcott crew stayed at the Jersey Sheraton.

New York City wedding Photography

Our first view of the city from the ferry! We are hanging below with our new friend Sean who is also a Nashville photographer. Hey Sean!

New York City wedding Photography

We headed straight for Time Square and did all the touristy stuff!!

New York City wedding Photography

Check out the Lamborghini Diablo! Suh weet!! The little bird was also really funny! He was just sitting there and let me come right up and snap a photo! He was a tired and crabby New Yorker! :)

New York City wedding Photography

The skyline in New York is something to behold. I have been to almost every major city in the states and nothing compares to this!

New York City wedding Photography

We went over to the Hershey’s store to check out all the chocolate fun! It was like Willy Wonka’s and Jody could not get enough of it!

New York City wedding Photography

Jody just being cool.

New York City wedding Photography

Here it is! My first ever New York hot dog! It was soooooo fun to eat!!

New York City wedding Photography

Jody and I then headed over to Central Park and walked around for a long time exploring everything! We hung out and had a Starbucks on the ancient rocks in the park. These rocks came down from the North Pole during the last ice age and if you look at satellite photos, you can actually see their path from up there dug into the ground. All the lines in the rocks also point North which is really neat!

The next two images were taken by our new friend, Sean who caught up with us in the park and took us to the above waterfall pavilion where many movies have been filmed here!

New York City wedding Photography

There was this one guy in the park making huge bubbles and it was really cool to watch!  I was shooting bubble boy and Sean was shooting me. :)

New York City wedding Photography

Here is my bubble boy shot!

New York City wedding Photography

This is Jody in front of Trump Plaza telling me “Your Fired!” Ha!

New York City wedding Photography

These guys were playing it up on the subway and were awesome! They got a five buck tip for their hard work.

New York City wedding Photography

While at the expo we ran into our dear friends Justin & Mary Marantz (remember we visited them in March & they did a rockin’ shoot of us?) and their awesome associate Julia! We ate at Hard Rock cafe in Manhattan. It was really LOUD! We took a cab ride back to the ferry and just so you know, the shot in the cab was taken at ISO 12,800.  Thanks to Julia for taking the shot of the 4 of us and to Justin for the cab ride shot!

New York City wedding Photography

Here we are at the expo! This is the entrance to the trade show floor where the biggest names in photography have their new toys up for viewing. Canon, Nikon, Quantum, B & H and Adorama to name a few! The second shot is Jody and I with Kelly Mondora, the Vice President of Westcott who started at the bottom and worked her way up to where she is now. She rocks and is an amazing person and business woman!

New York City wedding Photography

Jody grabbed a few shots of me teaching lighting techniques at the Westcott booth. The crowds were huge and you could have up to 100 people listing at any given time. It was really fun!!

New York City wedding Photography

A Washington DC Wedding in Nashville, TN40---40

Meet Ben & Mary- A super fun couple from the DC area who not only are great people and like to enjoy life, but they love for others around them to have a great time as well!  For Ben & Mary’s wedding we were working with a great team of people that day from amazing Nashville wedding planner, Mary Natalie (Weddings by Mary Natalie),  to Erin at the downtown Nashville wedding reception Loews Vanderbilt who is as professional as they come, to the phenomenal performer and band Super-T.

Check out some shots from the day!! **To be notified when Ben & Mary’s image are online and available for viewing and purchasing, sign up for their online gallery here.

Mary actually wore these boots the whole day! It was soooo Nashville!!

We loved the red dresses and vibrant fall colored bouquets.

The ceremony was beautiful and Mary’s dad wore a traditional kilt to keep with his roots.

Nashville, TN Wedding Photography

They had a great bagpipe player walk them back down the isle. Really unique!!

Nashville, TN Wedding Photography

Something else unique that Ben & Mary fit into their wedding day was a 2-hour block after the ceremony to hang with their bridal party and shoot around Nashville! It was awesome!!

Nashville, TN Wedding Photography

They wanted a shot with the Nashville skyline, so we delivered! :)

Nashville, TN Wedding Photography

Then it was off to the Parthenon where the bride and groom wanted to shoot next!

While shooting everyone, we grabbed some more shots of the bride and groom alone. It was a perfect day and perfect weather!  Thank-you Lord for no rain!

Then it was off to Loews Vanderbilt for the wedding reception! The room looked great and the Ben & Mary had a guest book especially made for them out of a giant TN Jack whiskey barrel. How cool is that?

The first dance was really romantic.  You could tell how Ben & Mary were so excited to be with each other!

Nashville, TN Wedding Photography

Something else unique was that the bride and groom had the amazing Super-T band out to perform at the wedding reception.  If you have not heard of Super-T then you are missing OUT!  Talk about one of the best bands and entertainers we have had the privilege of shooting at a reception.  Super T is well known and respected not only in the music circles but has been in the public eye often including performing for the First Family (again) at Jenna Bush’s Wedding Reception last year.

Tyrone Smith (aka Super-T) knows how to entertain and get the crowd going.  As soon as the band began to play everyone hit the dance floor and it was on! It was a sight to see!

Super-T then goes back about 2/3rds way through the show and comes out wearing his Super-T costume with blue tights and all! It is awesome! He is a dancing machine!!

Nashville Wedding Photography of Jim & Laura!!48---40

Last year we shot the beautiful wedding of Alexis Lempke and Abdul Anbari (at CJ’s Off the Square!) who are now expecting their first child (yay!) and this year we had the privilege of shooting her sister’s wedding – Laura Lempke.  We love the Lempke ladies (all artists and business owners of Adornments – custom jewelry, art, and invitations) and were glad to once again, be a part of a big day of their lives!

Sadly, it was raining all day which put a wrench in not only the wedding plans but of course, in the photography as well, but good thing they had an awesome group of wedding professionals who pulled off the day flawlessly.  One of those professionals was the AMAZING Amy Parman of Williamson County Weddings and Events.  We cannot rave enough about the professionalism that Amy and her team bring to a wedding.  If Amy was not there the wedding would have been up a creek without a paddle.  We cannot stress enough to brides how important it is to have a wedding planner/coordinator.  You never know what may come up and the last thing you want to be worrying about on your wedding day is handing things of the last minute changes that come up.

Anyway, enjoy some images from their wedding day!!!

So the pouring rain dampened any opportunity for shooting outside, but luckily all the girls were getting ready in the Hilton hotel downtown Nashville and we made use of their beautiful lobby for the girl’s shots!  :)

Destination: New York, NY! Help plan our Trip for this Week!61---70

NewYork

Jody and I are headed to NY this Wednesday and we are pumped!  Believe it or not, this is the first time that I will actually get to set foot in New York, NY!  We are headed there because Jody and I are going to the biggest photography expo in the world called the Photo Plus Expo. More than 27,000 photographers came out to this thing last year and more than 300 photography companies will be showcasing their newest gadgets and gizmos. The biggest speakers in the world will also be there from Joe Buissink and Zach Arias to David Jay. Jody and I have been asked to speak at the Westcott booth (who we are sponsored by) and are super excited!

We have also booked a little time to ourselves and will be taking a carriage ride through Central Park and then eating at the Tavern on the the Green restaurant. Yum!!

Sooooo…We would love any other ideas that anyone that has been to New York may have about cool things to do, so chime in and give us some fun places that we MUST visit while we are there! And for some incentive, if you give us a great suggestion AND we go and do it, then we will send that first person who mentioned it on the blog an official New York souvenir!!! So let us know what to do and you just might be celebrating Christmas with a sweet Big apple snow globe!! Be sure to leave us your name and a link to get a hold of you if you comment!

For those that are wondering what shoots are coming up next, here is a little sneak peak to wet your appetites!! And for those car enthusiast who are wondering, yes, this is a phat Bentley!

New York City “Plan Our Trip” Winner Announced!!! – Gray Photography [...] friends!  The time has come to announce the winner of our “Plan Our Trip to NYC” [...]
james Take the Staten Island Ferry while in NYC. It is free and had a great view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty..
twilight at morningside There's a lot of love for the (relatively new) High Line, a west side elevated railroad turned green space. I know there is general sogginess on the way, hope you can still check it out between rain drops. Hope you're having a blast in the Big Apple. There's a little something for everyone! Tonight we're out in search of the perfect old world cocktail... Pegu Club and Macau Trading Co.
Lora Carr hey there! Great to meet you at Expo today. My favorite restaurant in the city is Pompano 209 E 49th between 2nd & 3rd. Modern Mexican without the hype. Then hit the Whisky Bar at the W hotel a few short blocks away. Have fun!
Iz BTW, if you do something fun from my list and I win your souvenier- I'd prefer a photo of the City over a snow globe. It's cheaper for you, too! Just email it- don't even have to print. :) The view from DUMBO would be ideal- that was a GREAT suggestion! Don't miss out on Brooklyn.
Tammy Molnar our favorite h&m is there! sooooo if you love to shop & love h&m...you should def stop by! 3 stories of goodness! i believe this is the correct addy...640 5th Ave & 51st Street. have fun!
Jody Gray Ah!!! Gosh, I think we need to stay like an extra week or two!!! Man, so much to do! Great ideas peeps! Have no idea how we will narrow down what to do! :o/
ash IF YOU WANT CHEAP BROADWAY SHOW TIX got to the TKTS booth (it's on Broadway and like 46th, right in the middle of Times Square). They have DAY OF tickets at like 40-60% off the normal price. I think it opens at like 3pm. so if you have a couple flexible evenings, you can drop by and see if they have tix for a show that nite that you want to see. They almost ALWAYS have Mary Poppins tickets. That's what we did and it was AMAZING. They day we went, they also had Phantom of the Opera and like 6 others. So you have some to pick from . You can check out their website and they'll tell you the likelyhood of having certain tickets. Also - 9th street has great eateries. A local told us you could eat your way through the world over there, and I believe it! Check it out - the same blocks as time square (so like 40th-50th or whatever it is).
ericamay Jeff and I just went to NYC in August. It was incredible. Here are my suggestions: 1. Skip the long lines at the Empire State Building and instead do the "Top of the Rock" at Rockefeller Center. There is no wait usually, you'll have a much better view of Central Park and the Empire State Building will be IN your skyline view, which is really cool. Top of the Rock also has three levels of platforms. It was an amazing city view -- go in the morning if you can, before it gets very hazy! 2. Spend an evening in Brooklyn. There's an area called DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), and it's a little park/strolling area next to the water just across from Manhattan when you cross the bridge. It had gorgeous views of the Manhattan skyline, and is a relaxing way to be away from the chaos but still marvel at the immensity of the city! Brooklyn had some amazing restaurants, too! You can also stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge, which is romantic at night! 3. If you have time for a Broadway show, In The Heights is a new and fantastic show. The music and dance us diverse and the story is a great one! 4. Washington Square Park is so much fun at night, with all of the live music and locals who hang out there. Being there felt like home. :) Okay, that's all I have for now! Whatever you do, you'll enjoy it. It's such an awesome place!
Gabby Oh and def. take a carriage ride through central park at night! It's romantic!
Gabby Okay here's what you should do...from a New Yorker. I agree with some of these comments that there are many other places to eat that are better and cheaper than the Tavern, but it is a NY landmark and I think if you can afford it you should go for it! It's an experience! There's also a great diner called the Starlight Diner in time square where all the waiters and waitresses dance and sing! Its really fun! You should def. check out a broadway show and get tickets at the TKS booth! if you see a matinee it will be much cheaper too!I would def. check out Chinatown (take the subway to cannal street) for cheap desiner bags, belts, perfume, pashmina's, etc. FAO Schwartz is also fun! You can see the big piano from the movie "Big" and check out all the amazing toys they have there! Go see ground zero for sure! You will gain a new appreciation for all the people who gave their lives when you see the rubble that is still left behind. It basically just looks like a huge constructions site, but you can just imagine 2 of the tallest buildings in the city sitting right there. Go climb the empire state building and check out the rainbow room and NBC studios! There is so much more you can do, if you want to know anything else or get lost while you are there just call me!
Alyssa In response to Carlos Bruno, my thoughts exactly on the Tavern and the carriage ride, but I didn't want to discourage you from at least trying it first. However, there are so many better places to eat in NYC and for so much less. If anything, I'd say to just stop by the Tavern to look at its amazing gaudiness in all its glory. ;) Also, central park is best seen and photographed when walking. And, although I wish I were a New Yorker, I'm a simple Carolina girl, who loves the big city. :)
Iz Upper West Side! Just stroll, stop in any coffee shop, grab a PinkBerry!, have breakfast anwhere in the 'hood. Columbia Ave - anywhere in the upper 60's-70's Do NOT go into Central Park after dark. (I know you want to - don't do it.) Other than your carriage ride (which isn't really INTO to the park, just periphery), don't venture IN unless it's daylight. (then you're totally fine) Download NYC Subway map onto your iPhone before you go - you won't be sorry! (app store has it free) See a show on Broadway! Get 1/2 price tickets day of show at the TKTS booth in Times Square. If you haven't booked a hotel yet, stay here: http://www.libraryhotel.com/ (at least go inside and gawk at the lobby. Also recommend Int Center for Photog + Museum! http://www.icp.org/site/c.dnJGKJNsFqG/b.732135/k.D880/Museum.htm - Great stuff!! I LOVE the suggestions for China town, B&H, and street shopping! Do a romantic tourist thing and take a harbor cruise after dark - just pick a clear night. (I know, natives don't do that sort of thing, but this is your first trip, Zach! See the lights!) Also recommend hiring a limo or Towncar one night. Yes, it is REALLY expensive. But you can get into a limo, tell the driver you want to go to the hottest night club in town and you will be ushered past the line stretching around the block and straight in. They know the City well, and are happy to tell you tidbits about their town) Also, if shopping, you don't have to carry your finds around- the driver will meet you at the door and take care of everything. It's NICE. People watch in Washington Square. Go to the Shake Shake in Madison Square Park on 23rd & Broadway/5th after dark for ice cream. Yum! You won't be sorry about anything you do here- Even just walking the streets is an adventure! I'm sad I didn't know you were coming- I'd have cleared my scheudule and come into town to play. (I'm just upstate a wee bit) Have FUN!! I can't wait to hear your adventures!
Justin Wright you guys should hang out with this guy named Justin Wright because he is going to be up there for the conference too! : )
Amanda MOMOFUKU NOODLE BAR. It's so amazing. Order the Pork Buns and you will be in heaven! Also, please hit up the International Center for Photography. It is amazing. I don't think the Avedon exhibit is there anymore, but it's a great place to visit. MoMA of course, if you have time, or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Also, stroll through Central Park: this is so the time of year for New York! Paris owns Spring, but New York owns Autumn! Enjoy!
Alyssa There is a southern "soul food" restaurant in the Village called The Pink Teacup. The walls are literally covered in headshots of famous people who've eaten there. They have the best blueberry pancakes I have ever put in my mouth. And while you're in Central Park, be sure to find the Literary Walk- I'm sure it's absolutely beautiful in the fall, but it's so picturesque at any season. Have fun!
Mike Cowart Dude.. You. Have. Got. To. Go. To. The. LAND O' PHOTOGRAPHY - B&H! OMG. Totally amazing place to see it LIVE & in ACTION! It's like Willy Wonka On Crack with a Camera! Check it out downtown!
MelissaF I've never been to NY so I guess no souvenir for me! Have a great time. Can't wait to hear about your trip.
Carlos bruno NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOO ... Tavern in the Green? Crazy? Both you ... Stop! (And "we" are against the poor horses work also ... walk! Will be the most pleasure visit EVER!). Not saying the food at TOTG is bad, but for le$$ you'll have much better and much more cozy places at Upper West Side (Amsterdan Ave from 60 st 'till 90something ...)! And all close to the most beauty architectural places in Upper Manhattan. Besides you always can do the 'turists' walk ... Museums? Museum mile (East side) and a must to see in "our" case: the Photography School at 6th Ave. Have to check what is the deal this week .. Who gave you the tip about China Town had a GREEEEEAT idea, and you have a Dumpling place (close to China Town and Little Italy) BUT HAS TO BE a specific one. There are TONS 'uhun' there. The Carnegie "deli" is a killer tip also. Alyssa ... looks you are a nyorker (like be ... I mean, a brazilian radicated here). Of course you guys will end visiting B&H right? Will be 2 blocks from Javis Center! Adorama is a must for phototgraphers also. This week there is a (FREE!!!!!) exposition at Scholl of Visual Arts taht you can not loose! Walk all Bleecker Street and get more than ideas for your next pictures/workshops ... and prepare the wallet, but in a good way: singles (tons of 1 dollar bills) there are TONS of good deals all over! BROOKLYN BRIDGE ... thisweek will be 60 in some point ... so go at night ... greeeeeeeat lights! Maybe you can run into John Mayer filming again there! Need a personal guide? Let me help you guys! Send me an e-mail and I'll be more than happy to help! Otherwise, we'll meet at PDN! Take care "the-most-Gray-colorful-couple"! ;-).
Kirsten I would say definitely try to make it to the Pearl River store. They have the most amazing cheap finds, Asian as well as all kinds of other things. And it's a cool cultural experience if nothing else!!! Enjoy New York!!!!!! LOOOOOOOVE the picture of the bride and groom and Bentley!!!
Alyssa If you get a chance, head to Canal Street in Chinatown for some great designer knock-offs, then head over to Ferrara Cafe in Little Italy to warm up(http://www.ferraracafe.com/nyc/ferrara-bakery-cafe.php). It's one of NY's oldest coffee shops and has amazing desserts. Also, if you get time, you have to go to Carnegie Deli for some real NY cheesecake. It's to die for! I love NYC -- there's so much awesome stuff to do and see. Have an amazing trip. :)

Friday Fun – Boys Vs. Girls Mini Bowling!41---40

There comes a time when people need to connect with each other (I’m speaking to photographers here!) outside of their professions and what they do.  AND it’s super important (and fun) to invest in your relationship with your spouse and with other couples!  Not to ostracize those who aren’t married but there are certain times when ya just need to hang with other married folk and build those relationships.

Sooooooooooo for those who follow us on Twitter and Facebook you know we had an open hang out night for anyone who was married and a photographer or in the wedding profession circles, and we had a fun night of  MINI-BOWLING, Boys Vs. Girls! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!  Only one rule existed – No business talk allowed!!

It goes without saying, but we added the score board anyway just to show how bad the guys rocked the girls’ faces off! What up?!! We had a blast and here are some shots from the night!

This is Kristyn Hogan from KristynHogan Photography and hubby Matt high-fivin’ it

Super Hot David & Tammy Rockstar Nashville wedding photographer shoot!!!!!76---70

Yeah, so the title of this post is a little crazy but that is the only way I could describe the coolness of this couple. David & Tammy Molnar are amazing international wedding photographers based right out of old Nash-Vegas and are really great friends of ours. So, just like many of our photographer friends who take awesome photos, they tend to not have very many awesome photos of themselves. :) So they have gone about it the hard way by setting up their tri-pod and running back to the camera to take self-portraits as they travel all over the world shooting. So, when they asked us if we could do a personal shoot of them, we were honored! It is always a big task to shoot someone that does what you do for a living, so the pressure was on to rock it out! It was not hard, though, because as you can see these two are HOT!

We had a ton of fun shooting around Franklin and capturing their fun and quirky personalities. These guys are great and are definitely some good friends to hang out with and spend real quality time together. We hope you two enjoy the shots and we hope everyone else enjoys looking at your gorgeousness!!

Video by 2Duce2 Videography

We will be doing our IN-CAMERA: Shooting & Post workshop on Sunday the 13th and our IN-CAMERA: Light workshop on Monday the 14th.

Overview of the Gray Photography IN-CAMERA Workshop Series

- Want to learn how we are able to achieve the look of all our images without the aid of PhotoShop?
- Want to learn how we are able to edit an entire wedding in 2.5 hour solely using Lightroom?
- Want to learn how we are able to create and control light and get phenomenal images in any lighting situation and then apply that knowledge to your own style?

Our IN-CAMERA series of workshops actually show you how to shoot images that amaze right in the camera. This series of workshops will be held in Jacksonville Beach, Florida and feature class time, hands-on shooting with professional models, post-production and/or image critiques and much more. These workshops are fun, informative, and a great time to hang out with and meet other photographers who want what you want – great images without having to spend hours behind a computer screen editing!

IN-CAMERA: Shooting & Post

This one-day intensive workshop will focus on shooting your images correctly in-camera from shutter click to print.  Tired of having to fix all of your images on the computer?  Tired of adjusting your images one by one and spending so much time editing?  We will teach you how to get amazing images right inside the camera – images you would be proud to show a client right there!  Includes class time and group shoot.
This workshop will cover: Getting correct color, exposure, natural light – where to find it and how to control it, and a full demonstration of our complete post-production work flow in Adobe Lightroom.
Requirements: Basic knowledge of your DSLR with at least one fixed aperture lens (non-fixed aperture lenses are welcome!)
Bring it if you got it:  Laptop with Adobe Lightroom 2 installed to follow along through our workflow

IN-CAMERA: Light

This workshop is for the photographer who is ready to take their in-camera images to the next level. If you want to learn how to shoot in any lighting situation and create light instead of looking for it, if you want to enhance your images in a way that few do, then this is the workshop for you. This class will focus on advanced off-camera lighting using high-powered studio strobes to create a unique look for your work. This one day workshop includes class time and group shoot.
This workshop will cover: Off-camera speedlight control, manual studio strobes, how and when to use off-camera lighting, lighting ratios, lighting styles and which ones to use and when and much, much more!
Requirements: Overall knowledge of your DLSR, full understanding of controlling your camera on manual via adjusting ISO, shutter speed & aperture, at least one fixed aperture lens
Bring it if you got it: Pocket wizard, laptop for an anonymous critique at the end of the day

This class is limited to only 8 students, so sign up now to ensure a seat!!
