Ok, so we keep on getting more shooters from New Orleans sending us shots from the workshop that we were the subjects for in New Orleans at PartnerCon, so we thought we would share! Not to mention we love bragging on other photographers that are great at what they do.
You may be saying to yourself, “You’re photographers. Why are having images of yourselves such a big deal? You should be able to take pictures of yourselves all the time.”
Weeeeeell, yes we are photographers, but no, it’s extremely hard to take self portraits! We did it once and it took forever and the outcome… um, wasn’t very good to say the least.
So over the past little bit we have had some friends take images of us like the amazingly talented Evan Baines
And then the awesome Keoni K took the below images of us that are a part of our branding
But the biggest reason why we are so stoked about the New Orleans photos is not only because we had extremely talented photographers shooting us but because they were the wedding photos we wish we knew were out there when we got married!
We cannot stress enough how important it is to make the right decision for your wedding photography. You truly get what you pay for and that’s what happened to us when we got married four years ago. We did get some cool shots, but had no idea what was really out there if we would have properly budgeted for it.
So when Jeff & Erin Youngren, (fab photographers from San Diego) asked us to model for their workshop at PartnerCon in wedding attire we were pumped and so excited that we would get a few nice shots, and holy cow we have been BLOWN away.
So we just wanted to take another moment and thank the Youngren’s and all the other awesome photographers for shooting us and providing us with the wedding images we always wanted.
Here are some kick booty images that just came up on Jeff & Betsey’s blog (another suh weet photo duo from California), and we LOVE these guys!!! Not only do they shoot killer images but they are SUCH a fun couple and we heart them much!!!
Seriously, thank-you guys for everything. For more images of us, befriend us on our Facebook and you can see all the additional photos from lots of other stellar photographers!! We have been blown away and are sooooooooooo excited!!
Tammy Molnarawww these photos of you two are incredibly stunning!!! thanks for taking amazing photos of us! we can't wait to get them up hopefully soon. everyone loves 'em.:) you guys rock as always!
CoriOf course it helps that you two are just gorgeous human beings, inside and out!
Betsy, La VidaOh, you guys are just the best!!! Thanks so much for the shout-out! We are so thankful to have met you, gotten to know you, AND photograph you. Love, love, love it!!!
Jim CollinsHey you guys. Just leaving a quick note to let you know I stopped by...
Love these shots of you and love your work too. More than that though, I love the way you communicate you here and on your site. Great work!
Onward!
JC
The Velvet TrunkLOVE love love these pictures of you two. And a shout out to you two for the incredible shoot you did for me. Get compliments on those pictures ALL the time! Love you guys!!
Hugs,
Mel
BethGreat photos! It was soooo great to meet you in New Orleans and I loved your presentation!
Alright all you Mac fan boys out there… you can rejoice, we bought our first big Mac product (we don’t think iPods TOTALLY count and it is funny that we said Big Mac). We broke down and bought iPhones!
Yes, it’s true. We have been with Sprint for almost 9 years and had a killer phone bill payment plan! Unfortunately, Sprint was just lacking with their coverage (well, AT&T isn’t much better…), customer service (big time!), and the phones they offered. One of our bigger conversion factors was trying to get more connected and interactive with different social media outlets like Twitter and FaceBook which can be a huge part of growing one’s business (and has been for us), but have been a bit limited while out of the office and out of town with our interaction that we have been able to have due to our sucky phones.
So right before we headed to PartnerCon we switched over and have been digging it so far! (Yes, Heather & Eugene, you were right…).
We’re actually tweeting more often, responding to direct messages (woo hoo) and tweeting back to peeps. Amazing. We know.
People say this may be the beginning of our (94.5 percent of the market share) PC to (6.5 percent of the market share) Mac conversion but we don’t think so. Sorry to disappoint.
And here they are!
Ahh… and we have matching cases in “his” black and “her” blue. Is that not cute or what?
What do you love about your iPhone? For those of you in business, what about the iPhone has made your business better? I personally love the fact that my text messages are all saved together by person in a conversation so I can remeber what I said to who!
IzI'm commenting here from my iPhone- Love, Love, Love it!! Rocked my world when I made the switch. Only downside is the bigger bill- I was a diehard Sprint-er too. But in NY, ATT coverage is great. Best app? NYC subway map! Yeehaw! Also love IFound, and Have2Pee. :). And the Moron Test- totally addictive. ENJOY the little Macs!
Kaysha WeinerI just got an iPhone a few weeks ago and I LOVE IT! The wordpress app lets me approve blog comments and post from my phone, and the google reader app comes in handy for keeping up with my favorite blogs! Enjoy :)
nancy m.i want one, probably is...i get a discount from my dayjob for verizon! btw...all my family has verizon, but i still want one BAD! maybe someday. congrats on the conversion. i am lovin' my imac that i purchased this year. the conversion wasn't as bad as i had thought! so maybe just maybe you will convert totally:)
tiffany zajasSuch pretty iPhones. :)
Glad to hear you're not totally converting to Mac though...PC photographers unite!
CoriI LOVE my iPhone - I love that when I am talking to someone I can immediately access my calendar, set up dates, do three way calling, all while I am out!
I love the ability to text and check email, or update my status on Facebook.
And I really do think that one day you will make the switch! I used to train people how to work and fix PCs. Terry used to build PCs. Then one day he told me he wanted a Mac. I laughed at him and mocked him. But then I watched him use the darn thing and it just worked! Four and a half years ago I made the switch and I WILL NEVER GO BACK! This from the girl who used to train people how to use PCs!
Paul MankeI LOVE my iPhone! It really is what photographers need to keep in touch! With my iPhone, I can be out of the office and my clients never know! Constant contact with the outside world is awesome! And to get away from it all...I just turn it off....
Jeb WilsonWhich is an ironic statistic as that's also the same percentage of how often PC's crash and fail... LOL
welcome to the functioning family guys... Even of just on a small scale...
Geoff HeithWelcome to the good life...now to switch those computers haha...
Aurora OnoratoWHOO HOOO WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE!!! I personally haven't gone the phone route yet.. (but I'm working from home with my kids 90% of the time) I hope your first experience with the wonderful intelligent MAC technology brings you back for more!
It was 4 years ago this day that Zach and I stood with each other in front of 130 guests and committed to stick with each other ’till death do us part.
It’s unbelievable that we have been married four years. Where does the time go?? We are celebrating our anniversary on the Caribbean seas and are pumped to finally go somewhere outside of TN to celebrate our anniversary. Woo hoo!
Marriage most definitely is not easy and people were right when they told us “marriage takes a lot of continual work.” Things definitely aren’t roses all the time, and we still don’t have everything perfect (yet… ;o), but we love each other and are committed to each other no matter what. It’s hard at times, and easy at others… We’re so thankful that we have each other and we often like to joke that we are the other’s only friend because we spend SO much time together. ha ha.
A few books that have been a huge blessing to our marriage… (click on the image for more info on the book).
We love talking with other couples and hearing their wisdom and advice when it comes to being married. For those of you out there, what advice can you give us and others? Bring it on!
nancy raytotal money makeover = awesomeness! we say that book saved our marriage from mannnny fights ;).
also, i suggest "his needs her needs [making your marriage affair-proof" ... it's fantastic!!!
happy [late] anniversary to a lovely couple :)
tiffany zajasAw, Happy Anniversary [a few days late.] My husband and I have read and appreciated most of those books [except for the first one, we'll have to check that out.] Have a fantastic time on the cruise! :)
Betsy, La VidaOh my goodness! How did I miss this post?! Happy, happy anniversary! You two are such an inspiration to other married couples out there, professionally and as peeps. Hope it was a fab day for you!!
Jody Gray@Walter - we give "The Most Imp" year to our couples too!!! Oooh we love Love & Respect too!! That is a good one!
WalterCongratulations!!! This Wednesday my wife and I will celebrate our 20th. We are also a husband and wife wedding photography team. For the last 3 years we have been giving “The Most Important Year in …” book to our couples at their engagement session. One even called us at their 1st Anniversary and asked where we bought it and she bought 2 for wedding presents. Another book I’ll recommend to you is “Love & Respect” by Dr. Emerson Eggerich. If you concentrate on pleasing Christ you will please you spouse by default.
Josh UlmerCongrats! We celebrated 5yrs on the 20th!! The 5 Love Languages rock! That book helped us to see things early on and learn how to really communicate with each other and how to truly love the other person!
Kristen SteeleSo that was the book we read for our premaritial counseling (the first one) and I recommend it to EVERYONE, it's been such a blessing to us. I still go back and reread chapters sometimes!
CoriCongratulations both of you. Terry and I are coming up on 16 years of marriage. Two of the books on your list are ones we've read and you're right - they really help, as long as both of you are willing to work on the ideas/tips/suggestions contained therein.
Once kids come along a whole new dynamic enters the marriage. We have learnt not to get into a rut - routine is good, a rut is not. When the kids were little and we had no money to go out on date nights, I'd make an early dinner for them, put them to bed and then set up a romantic picnic for Terry and I. Now that the kids are older and we both work from home, we slip away for a date lunch or movie in the middle of the day - keeps things fresh.
Compromise! Not on the big things, but on the things you can live with. I'm sure you've already discovered that one though! Arguments are not about winning, or being right, but on reaching an agreement you can both live with.
Honesty - without it any marriage is doomed.
OK, done writing my book now!
Once again congratulations! I have to keep reminding myself you three Broulliett girls are all grown up. I still remember seeing you around the house when I'd come and pick Warrick up after work!
Thomas FrankCongratulations you two that is awesome! Today is my fiances and I's 4 year anniversary too. Have fun on your cruise and I will see you both when you come to OC on the 13th and 14th.
nancy m.Happy Anniversary! What a blessing. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 11 yrs. Yes, it is tough! It is so worth it though. Four kids later and he is still so amazing. Just for tidbits: We have been together more than 1/2 our age. We started dating the summer before 9th grade. He is my rock! I pray that the two of you have many years together because marriage is just totally AWSOME! Have a blessed day and cheers to many years to come.
FeuzaI have been married 5 and half years now and I some days are like I cant stand him, only lasts a little though, lol and it is part of it, dealing with it and committing to your commitment before God and Man to love them unconditionally, best two tips I have is #1 to always communicate your feelings, ideas and thoughts cause you can not assume they understand and ready you and always review your yearly expectations
#2, get out of routine, bring back that I am head over heels feeling that gets lost in the routine of marriage, plan get always, trips, surprises cause you bring that loving feeling all back again
Stephen KnuthHappy Anniversary!! Thats so awesome how you two have kept Jesus the core of your Marriage! Woohoo!!
Kia GregoryHappy Anniversary, y'all! I've been lucky in love and marriage for 8 years and the only advice I can give you is to sometimes just let him win. Not all the time. But sometimes.
Mike larsonAwesome guys!!! Congrats!! We just had our 4 year anniversary last month!! Praise God for his goodness in blessed marraiges!
NathanWell as you guys know I'm not even married yet, however I think the best advice to being successful with everything and in everything is by putting God first, which I know you already do.
and I love your guys' book suggestions. Every mans battle is awesome!
Happy thanksgiving and happy anniversary!!
MelissaFI don't have any advice since I've only been married about a year and a half but I just wanted to say Happy Anniversary to you both and I hope you have a wonderful vacation!
Carlos BrunoYou forgot to talk about the book "Men are from mars and women ...", because they are from EVERYWHERE! After marriage, I can't find my lucky shirt anymore! All places cover with HER stuff! (I can't believe she could possibly trash my LUCKY SHIRT!)
Welcome to Part II of our photography Tips & Tricks with awesome couple, Blake & Andrea!
OK, so this shot (which is one of yours truly) is completely different than the last one, and is frankly very different than what you see with most modern wedding photography and we are going to talk about why. Now the pose and composition are obviously not something new, but the lighting and depth of the shot are and that is why it is not something you see a lot of at weddings. Lit shots like this one usually are not done because they take too long to set up, require lots of powerful lights which are heavy, and can be too in-your-face for some clients. So how do you solve all of those problems at a wedding so that you can get this kind of a shot that is really different and really cool?
First, we will talk about how we captured the shot, then we will talk about how we made it practical at the wedding.
The first thing you notice with a shot like this (and what many shooters ask us a lot) is that the background must be “photoshopped” in and how did you do it? The answer is honestly, I have no idea how to do something like that in Photoshop and it is all real and all done in the camera. Promise! There is no retouching done on this shot either with the clients skin, no dodging and burning in Lightroom or Photoshop, and no color enhancements of any type.
How we did it:
Light – The lighting rig is a 500 watt mono light with a 24×32 inch soft box from Westcott. Many shooters will use small light sources like 580 ex speedlights and so on, which are awesome, but unfortunately can’t produce a big light source with a lot of power. And as we talked about earlier, the bigger the light source, the softer and prettier the light. So the 24×32 softbox is big enough to give us pretty light from about 4 to 6 feet away, but small enough that we can throw it in ourcar without breaking it down and can easily move it around attached to the light stand. The whole rig (with our power Vagabond 2 battery pack for power which is made right here in Nashville!) weighs in at about 28 pounds. I use a heavy duty C-Stand which is very stable and has a small footprint so that my light won’t fall on someone’s head. The Vagobond also acts as a sand bag and attaches to the light stand to help hold it down.
Lighting can seem complex, but I use a simple system that gets me shots like this every time. I put the bottom of the box at chin height (of the subject), pick my lighting pattern (in this case straight on glamor lighting), take a meter reading until my meter tells me that I am at a 3 to 1 lighting ration (which takes about 10 seconds), take a shot and then adjust the background to taste with my shutter speed. That may seem complex, but when you know the system and how it works it is like magic! In our IN-CAMERA: Light workshops we discuss and go through this whole process.
For those wondering about white balance, since we’re using flash, our white balance setting is set to Flash.
Why the shot works:
I create the light on my subject to be a bit more than twice as bright as the sky in the background (which ensures that the sky will have detail in it). When doing these shots I look for some cool sky, but then look to see if there is some really cool dark area (like the trees and ground in this shot) which makes the image naturally contrasty.
The composition on this kind of shot is super important because we have tons of depth in the shot, so if there is something distracting in the background we can’t hide it! The dark trees also make for a nice natural vignette right in the camera. I put the couple in the bottom third of the frame to make it more of an artistic shot that is about the whole scene, and not just the couple. I shot the image from slightly below waist level (and at a wide angle) to give the shot a look of drama and to make the couple look slightly taller than they are.
Something that is incredibly important is to either shoot an image straight or obviously “crooked.” When an image is SLIGHTLY crooked for no apparent reason it diminished the power the image can have and looks a bit unsettling. You can even buy grids to put inside your camera so you can get your lines right and not have to fix it later in post. Be a straight shooter! :)
Speed is also key with shots like this at a wedding and it is not too practical if you can’t do it fast. So we solve that by using our math skills and knowing what lighting ratios will give us the look we want, and then use our light meter to get those ratios. Some people may say that this is too in your face for clients and that all that gear takes away from your rapport with them on the day. Well, that could be true, but in business it is all about how you do business, so if your client feels from you that this is cool and relaxing and fun and how it gets done, then that is how it will be! So leading up to the wedding we do engagement shoots which get them used to how we shoot, and most of our clients come from referrals and have heard about what we do and expect this type of shooting from us (so we better deliver!).
The last thing is that you need to know when to use it, and when NOT to use it. We use it a bit on the day and do a few shots, then put it away when the wedding starts.

Betsy, La VidaNAILS!! Love these teaching sessions.
You guys rock the Casbah!
Kaysha WeinerI'm lovin' the "Tuesday Photography Tips & Tricks!" Can't wait to learn more from you in a few weeks in OC, yay!!!
Diana PetersThanks for the great tips! I've started using a Quantum Q-flash with very similar results, and just love it! I was still a little hit-and-miss with how to meter for it though, and I'm sure this will help alot. Thanks!
imthiaz housemani know this is a side issue, but that dress is killer...love the lighting as always! nice job.
Brandy ThompsonAt the first glance, I thought that, it is an Adobe work, but, after reading the whole post, I was just surprised that it was not an Adobe work. Good work done. Keep going dear.
Michael BromleyWow oh wow! Such an amazing shot all of that makes sense. I will definitely have to try this out! Thanks guys ;-)
Erin PickeringI am surprised that this pic is not photoshopped... when I grow up, I wanna be like you guys... very impressive!

Tira JHi Zach and Jody! I am coming to your workshop on Sunday the 13th and am super excited to meet you guys and most of all LEARN! Happy Thanksgiving!
I have to say that my sister is a super talented gal. All of us girls (I have an older and a younger sister) are creative in our own ways thanks to both of my parents. I want to take a moment and brag on my older sister, as well as maybe give you some ideas for Christmas shopping!
Introducing my sister Jacq (also know as Jacqueline or Jackie as I called her growing up):
Not only is my sister super organized, and loves photography (must be in the genes, check out this shot my mom took of her when we were little…aw so cute!)…
…but my sister blows me away with her talent at the computer. Jacq for the past couple of years has worked with a company doing photo restoration and has branched out on her own. Her work blows me away!! She can take a water damaged photo, a faded photo, a torn photo – you name it and bring the image back to it’s original state. It has been crazy seeing the hundreds and hundreds of projects that she has worked on and what she has done.
With a baby on the way (the first grandchild of both sides of our family! Woo hoo) my sister has moved into freelance and fired up her own business. So exciting!
For those of you wondering out there what meaningful Christmas gift you can give your parents, grandparents, siblings, or special someone, think about having an image restored & retouched. With technology these days and a skilled person utilizing these tools correctly, it’s amazing what memories can be pulled back and make such a meaningful gift.
Check out a small sample of her work:
Amazing, eh? Talk about a meaningful Christmas gift for a family member or loved one.
If you’re interested in having any images restored, contact Jacq at JWashburnPR@yahoo.com. Mention you found her on our blog and receive a free quote. Contact her by December 5th and receive 15% off!
Colette ChristmasIncredible work! Good to know... I'll keep this in mind and pass it on to others... fo' sho'!!
Heather AutryJackie - Awesome work with the restorations!
Jody & Zach - Great job promoting family, that's what it's all about. Now we need to know what Kelly is amazingly talented at too. :)
Carlos BrunoFrom a good photoshoper: her work is AMAZING!
The WHOLE family is blessed hun?
What else is there to say except thank-you to Citi Kitty!! We love you more than litter itself! :) And thanks to our cat, Star, for letting us into your private world (and then exploiting you for some laughs).
Mary Natalie Hesterhahahaaa!!! I am deeply disturbed yet, I cannot look away!! That is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time!!!! If you can do this, you will have no problem potty training your child someday....
tonhya kaeOh my goodness Jody, haha I literally laughed out loud when I watched this...I love the soothing music playing in the background! haha! I'm glad you decided to put this video up rather than the one you showed me in New Orleans where Star is pooping! :) Good choice.
Kevin AutryNow you just need to teach her to flush, and turn the fan on if needed.
Betsy, La Vida CreationsHoly craptastic! That's so awesome. Wonder if we could train our 70 pound dog Mace to do that... Star's a very tolerant kitty for letting you videotape! ;-)
wendyThat is just wonderful! I want my cat to do that!!
Jody Gray@Lianna They say it can take anywhere as little as 2 weeks to 8 or 9. It took a little bit longer for Star due to our traveling and leaving her with other people and not wanting them to have to deal with the whole cat toilet training thing so we'd break out the little again :/ He he he....
tiffany zajasOh my goodness! That is the greatest thing ever. haha, I am very impressed.
Tami StaffordNo WAY! You have got to be kidding me!?!?! My ENTIRE life would change if I could teach my 2 cats to pee pee in the potty!! haha
wow!!
liana bananaOh - puuurfect! You've inspired us to toilet-train our Grace and Charlie!! How long did it take for Star to catch on?
So this post is for all you out there who love photography, which is hopefully everyone who comes to this blog! :) Today I (Zach) am going to show a few images and talk about a few of the things that we did during the a recent wedding of ours to get the images to look the way they do.
Photography, especially wedding photography, is unique in its own right in that a wedding photographer has to be proficient at many styles of shooting in order to get the job done. We have to know how to do portraits, photojournalism, architectural photography, product photography (for those little rings and details) AND do it all in .5 seconds! It is very difficult to do any of these types of photography well, let alone do them all in one day and shoot 1,200 final images that all rock our clients faces off. Whew!! Not an easy job! Sooooo, today we are going to talk about portraits (I hate that word and if anyone knows a better one, let me know) and a few different techniques in doing them.
Our lovely models today are the amazingly hot Blake and Andrea whose wedding we shot a few weeks back. These guys are the bomb and we love them to death! :)
Image number one!
OK. So I dig this shot a ton that my hot wife took and would like to not only talk about why it rocks, but how we did it.
We were shooting their session on their wedding day about 2.5 hours before sunset which is not the best time in the world to shoot because the sun is still pretty high in the sky. The best time of day to shoot is 1 hour before sunset, and the first hour of the sun rising because the sun is going through more atmosphere which disperses it wider and makes the light softer. The one and only thing that makes light soft and pretty, is the size of the light source. You can diffuse light all you want from any light source, but if the light is not BIG, then it will still be harsh.
So because the light was still pretty harsh we busted out our 5 in 1 reflector, took off the outer reflector which then makes it into a scrim. A scrim simply lets light pass through it, but disperses it out so it gets soft and pretty (and if your couple is standing under a tree then it gets rid of nasty speckled lighting!). Then, here is the big tip, we move that big diffuser of ours as close as we can possibly get it without it being in the frame to get the light source as big as we can which makes the light soft.
So in this shot, our assistant was off to camera right holding the big diffuser. We then had our couple turn about 35 degrees away from the light source (which gives us a loop lighting pattern, or a pattern of light where there is highlights on their camera right side, and some soft shadows on their camera left side). This in turn gives our couple some dimension and helps the shot to not look flat.
So because the background is not diffused and getting direct sunlight, it is going to be lighter than the subjects. This looks great as long as the scene is evenly lit, because our subjects, which are slightly darker, end up getting the attention of your eye because they are the contrasting point of interest.
A couple other elements that bring this shot together:
- Posing: In guiding our couples during the shoot times, we often tell them to move into each other REALLY close (because close is good for married people and looks great in the shot).
- Composition: Note where Jody placed the couple in the frame. They are not dead center (which many time makes shots look compositionaly dull) but are off to one side a bit and their eyes are in the top third of the frame which is the dominant part and helps bring your eye right to them.
- Lens Choice: For this shot, we went with a long lens which compresses the image and helps the shot to feel close and intimate, and also helps throw the background out of focus to keep the attention on our bride and groom.
- White Balance: The last thing that really makes the shot is that the color is really nice. The color in this image was achieved the way we get all of our color, by doing a custom white balance setting with our Expo Disc. To learn more about this process that will ROCK YOUR WORLD come out to one of our IN-CAMERA Workshops! :)

That is it for now! I hope you have enjoyed the shots and seeing the process! We love being able to share so we hope that this post gets you pumped to go out and shoot some awesome images!! Let us know if you enjoyed this post and we’ll make sure there’s more like it!… Part II might pop up pretty soon and the shot being dissected just might be one with some on-location strobe lighting… Whoo hoo!
Jen HewlettI've just discovered your blog and I love it!
I've recently launched a wedding wellie business, and as I have such a modest budget - I'm doing everything I can myself - including the web images/photography. I can imagine you cringing, having such an important thing like photography left to a complete amamature, however, I managed to borrow a really nice camera from work and got some pretty cool shots (i think?? http://www.weddingtonboots.com/page3.htm).
So thank you to your blog, I will use your tips for my next photoshoot which will be of the bride in the wellies. Wish me luck and I welcome any tips for a cool photo!
Byeee Jen x
Lydia ShannonThank you so much for this awesome information! This is the second time today that I heard how great the ExpoDisc is. Do you guys use the neutral or portrait one?
d a v i d m o l n a rzach you are such a great teacher! i have learned so much from you! thanks for being our friends. hey want to go on a cruise on sunday?
Carlos BrunoMan ... you're GOOD!
Don't think in anyone can give those details and not be too much technical.
McNally and Strobist (DH) need to check this post out.
Matt BrittonLove it. You guys are blogging geniuses! Much to learn from the Gray team.
AlisaThanks for sharing and please keep the tips coming!

ashi so appreciate you guys sharing your wealth of knowledge! you guys are great teachers.
MelissaYES!!! Love this post - keep 'em coming! Love hearing the "behind the scenes" perspective.
Thanks!
For those of you not following us on out Twitter or FaceBook, you might have missed out on the news that we are going on a CRUISE!!!
This year has been super busy and we have been working hard and saving hard and are in need of a long break away from phones, email, internet and work :) A time to get away, refresh and revive is exactly what we need, and it doesn’t hurt that the cruise happens to fall over our anniversary! :)
It all started about two weeks ago when great friends and photographers, David & Tammy Molnar said they were looking into last minute cruises and wondering if we would want to join. We jumped at the opportunity and booked it that day!
Short of Zach, none of us have ever been on a cruise and are not fully sure what to expect, pack, think about, etc. My sister and her husband went on a cruise a bit ago and we have some family members who have been as well telling us some things to avoid, things to bring, things to keep in mind, and their help has been invaluable!
For those of you cruisers, we would definitely appreciate some insight if you have it!
A little bit of info about our trip if that will help you with your ideas & suggestions:
Royal Caribbean is the cruise line and we leave from Puerto Rico. Suh weet!
The islands we will be stopping at are:
- Bridgetown, Barbados
- Castries, St. Lucia
- St. John’s, Antigua
- Philipsburg, St. Maarten
- St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
Tips and advice are mucho welcome (we obviously don’t speak much Spanish!)! We are so pumped and excited to go! Yay vacation!
d a v i d m o l n a rhey would you guys want to go on a cruise with us? it leaves on sunday. i could teach you how to snorkel. oh and my dad could ship us some extra snorkel gear so you don't have to rent any? oh and we could probably find great flights to puerto rico where a cool route leaves from. thoughts?
OlegMy wife and I went last year on Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas. At the time it was the biggest ship, but I think they have one even bigger now. It was Great. Best vacation we had. Check out the slideshow from our trip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRKA9VE117E
And have fun.
Noelle McCoyBest piece of advice my friends... is avoid being sea sick at all costs! =) You two are the best... the McCoy's {heart} the Gray's and we wish you a supa-fun and relaxing vacation!!!
Tammy Molnarwe can't wait to cruise with you guys...don't know if the boat will be able to handle all of the hotness from us four...hahaha. thanks for posting this...the comments are already so helpful! looks like we have 2 formal nights....woot woot!
Aprilawesome! I lived in Puerto Rico for 4 years. I have been to most of the islands you talked about. If it were me this is what I would do.
San Juan, go on a catamaran adventure. They provide a day on the water, lunch and all the rum punch you can drink. http://www.eastwindcats.com/ I think they have a free shuttle from San Jaun. 2. Go see the old fort in Old San Juan 3.Rainforest? 4. hit the casino at the El Sanjuan resort.
St. Johns is great. Much better than St. Thomas where the cruise ship usually pulls in. If your not into shopping I HIGHLY suggest getting scuba certified and a dive company will take you to beef island where you can dive the Wreck of the RM Rhone...it's rated one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world. We did it as our first on our own dive after we got certified and it was AWESOME!
Barbados...can't remember much about it. Seems like we went swimming with a sea turtle.
St. Maarten This place is awesome. Half the island is french and half is dutch...but they both take American money (or they did) There a bar that is on a big boat, the place next door to it has awesome food. Can't remember the name it's like Joes or Larry's.. It's on the french side across the street from the Royal Palm resort in Cole bay. It's not in Phillipsburg proper...get out of that area it's yucky. We also went wind surfing on the french side. They give you like 20 minutes of lessons and then set you loose in the cove. It was a total blast and a workout.
Pack for 82 degrees... with the most perfect breeze in the evenings.
Have fun! Sorry for the long comment!
Brent DeitrichAwesome! My wife was born in Bridgetown, Barbados and she still has family that lives there. Say hi to them for us!
JenniferNot too much advise.. I was 17 when I went on a crusie with my family so its been a while and I was young. You should have a great time and your going to some awesome ports. I would check on some of the pre deals you can do and also some of pre drink packages you can order because it will add up quick !! But most of enjoy!
AlisaIf you tend to have motion sickness call your dr and tell him you're going on a cruise. He can call you in an RX for a patch you put behind your ear to prevent motion sickness. Other than that, sit on the ship deck and soak up the sun, relax, take a fun shore excursion, and take lots of pictures...oh wait, you were probably going to do that anyway! :) Have fun!!
CharliPI think you guys will enjoy it. My BF and i were first time cruisers this spring. We did the Royal Caribbean Adventure of the Seas Southern Caribbean cruise (Left from San Juan and visited Aruba, Curacao, Dominica, and St. Thomas) We did the 7-day version and we absolutely LOVED waking up in a new place each morning and not having to get bored anywhere. We also spent a ton on pre-booked excursions from the boat and we are SO glad we did. They left our tickets for us in the room for each day's excursion and we didn't have to wonder where to go or who to meet when we got off the boat. (The people who didn't pre-book excursions seemed a little nervous and frustrated trying to do so on the boat.) But we hated being stuck on the boat a lot of the time. Sure there's a lot to do, but it's not always what it sounded like. The casino and the bars were fun, but they got a little tired after two days and the nightlife and variety shows werent as diverse as we'd have hoped. WE STILL had a great time, but most of the nightlife and activities were geared toward a Latin crowd since it leaves from San Juan and 80% of the boat is Spanish-speaking. SO, we felt a little out of our element on the boat. Off the boat we were in heaven. We loved the pool until we jumped in and realized it was salt-water. I never got back in, and my eyes thanked me for it. BUT, i had fun laying by it and drinking. A note: Royal Caribbean wants you to pay for drinks on board and tip. It gets really really pricey so save up now. The food was awesome and there are SO many choices on board. We had a great time getting to know the other couples at our assigned table during formal dinner nights (when we were up for it) and we loved taking elegant pics on board. We met a lot of great people and we'd TOTALLY go back again (just not leaving from San Juan -- we hear the other boats have a more diverse crowd.)
What We're Glad We Packed: Small waterproof pouches, backpacks, and carriers. (You're off the boat all day.)
lots of memory cards (we took like 2000 pics!)
multiple swimsuits -- NOTHING dries
sunburn soothers -- we burned SO badly
lots of towels -- the pool was out
easy things to hold money and room card in
Water shoes -- comfy and you're ready for most things!
What We Wish We'd Packed: A set of friends (glad you guys aren't going alone!)
our iHome for the cabin -- TV sucked
Bathroom spray!
What We Wish We Hadn't Brought:
Too many "formal outfits" and clothing options all together. Nobody really cares about dress codes, and we over did it and our bags were heavy. We repeated swimsuits and covers so much.
Enjoy!! Can't wait to see pics!!
ashmake sure you check what the dinners are - some have more dressy dinners and some even a "formal" night. also, make sure you know what your money is paying for. when i went on carnival, certain things at mealtime were not including, like anything besides water and tea.
MelissaHmmm, not much advice - I've never been on a cruise and I've never been to any of the ports (I did go to St. John, USVI and if any of your ports are as beautiful as that island you guys are going to have a FABULOUS time!)
I will live vicariously - have fun!
Your dynamic duo Nashville wedding photographers Zach and Jody Gray had the privilege of shooting the super hot Landon & Laila this past weekend! Here are just a few to hold you over until the big reveal and full blog write up on these two hotties!
Can you guess who took what shot? Or did one of us take them both? You may never know…. :)
